Former PAS deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa will not be attending the party's 58th muktamar (general assembly) from Friday due to prior commitments overseas, Berita Harian has reported.
Without naming the source of the information, the daily said it is understood that Nasharudin has been abroad since Sunday.
After failing to defend his position last year, Nasharudin had been openly critical of party colleagues, also claiming that PAS is deviating from its founding principles.
He has also publicly said that PAS' relationship with its Pakatan Rakyat allies would compromise the party's intended direction.
Within PAS, Nasharudin is seen as a promoter of the so-called unity government concept, which many consider a euphemism for cooperation with arch rival Umno.
Observers are keen to see whether Nasharudin and former Selangor PAS chief Hasan Ali are still influential in PAS. This is expected to be reflected in the tone of speeches by delegates at the three-day muktamar .
The Berita Harian report also quoted a source as saying that Nasharudin's absence is not a big issue because it is normal for some delegates to attend to other affairs.
“PAS doesn't have a problem if he or anyone else have more pressing issues to attend to. We won't take action because this is normal,” said the source.
“Maybe, there are a lot of people who want to see where (Nasharudin) is sitting (at the muktamar ) because he would (have been sitting) on stage,”
Nasharudin was appointed the secretary-general in 1999 before being elected deputy president - a post he held for two terms until he was defeated by Mohamad Sabu last year.
