MAINTAIN party discipline and do not let your supporters instigate you to go against the leadership and decisions of the party.
That is the advice that Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak gave to party leaders to ensure that Barisan Nasional gets two-thirds majority in the 13th general election.
He said that leaders who had pledged to support every candidate chosen by the party would sometimes waver when instigated by their supporters.
In his winding up speech at the end of the assembly yesterday, Najib said Umno and Barisan Nasional were fully prepared to face the coming general election and were confident of winning as they had “very strong soldiers”.
“I truly believe that we are strong and our enemy is weak. I believe that the people will choose us. But I fear, just a little, the bickering among us.
“When I ask you (the delegates) to pledge your loyalty to the party irrespective of whether or not you are chosen as candidates, I hear a loud echo. But when you face supporters, who are batu ronson (flint stone) and kaki kipas (those who fan dissent), if our conviction is not strong, we will waver.
“From fully supporting the chosen candidates, some will water down their support, then stop working or worse, will sabotage or switch sides,” he said.
Najib also led the delegates to pledge that they would deny votes to PKR, PAS and DAP.
“This is the time for us to be united and say no to slanders by PAS, pluralism by PKR and racism by DAP.
“Let us hold fast to this pledge for the sake of Islam, our race, Malaysia and for the sake of our children. We must be loyal to Umno and the leaders as the party is a defender of Islam and the rakyat. We must close ranks because unity is the pillar of our Umno and defend the sanctity of our religion because only this way can we protect the welfare of the Malays and other races,” he said.
Urging Umno members to work harder to convince the people to support Barisan, Najib said one vote for PKR is a vote for the destruction of the people's faith, a vote for PAS is a vote for disunity among the Muslims, and a vote for DAP is a vote for the oppression of the Malays.
He ended his speech with a prayer for divine intervention to ensure that Barisan and Umno would continue to be fair to all, and for the party to be protected from slander and win in the next general election, and for the country to be safe-guarded from ruin.
